Dungeons & Dragons will forever be respected as the grandfather of pen-and-paper RPGs. Heck, it’ll be remembered as the creator of the RPG genre in its entirety. Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy would never have happened were it not for Dungeons & Dragons. Every RPG you pop into your console or PC owes a little something to Gary Gygax.

The game has of course evolved since its original release. We’ve have four separate “editions” of it, in fact. And now, as of today, we’ve got a fifth. Wizards of the Coast has released the Starter Set to the 5th Edition of Dungeons & Dragons, called simply “D&D Starter Set.”

It’s the first product in what will be an avalanche of Dungeons & Dragons stuff this year. As the name suggests this new release will give you all the basics that you need to get adventuring, and will be a nice, easy way to ease new players into what can become a very complex game and set of rules.

If you do want to get a taste for the game before plunging in and buying the Starter Set, you can also download a free copy of the basic rules from the Wizards of the Coast website.
