The Weekly Discussion: Playing (as) Favourites

1 min read

This weekend’s discussion is focused squarely on those characters that make the game for us as players. Be it starring hero, black-hearted villain or goofball background second-stringer; these are the characters that make us come back for more.

There’s no shortage of memorable characters in gaming history. Whether you’re talking classic stars like Mario and Link or current heroes like Ezio, the Master Chief, and Kratos- they’ve all made for some fun times and some epic moments of play across some of the biggest games of all time.

Gaming is also home to some of the coolest baddies to ever corrupt an entertainment medium though. A good villain can make any experience all that much better and can actually become just as much a fan favorite (maybe even more so) than the hero. The bottom line is that we all have our favorite characters to play as, against, or side-by-side with.

And this week’s Weekly Discussion is all about them- the guys and gals that make games so engaging and captivating for all of us, the players. So the question, very simply, is this: who’s your favorite videogame character?

  • As far as classic games go- my favorite's Mario all the way. That guy/game has some kind of magic mojo.

Now there's just too many great characters to pick from. I think we're really in a great time for storytelling and characters in games and it's only getting better.

  • I'd have to go with Solid Snake. At the ripe old age of 28, I drenched the neck of my tee-shirt with tears at the end of Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3) and I'm proud of it too! Haha

  • Anju from Majora's Mask is probably my favorite character…the first time I discovered her sitting alone in the rain, and that she would break down and cry to you if you spoke to her as the Deku Scrub, my heart broke. That's something that almost never happens in games — and at this rate could never possibly happen again in a Zelda game — so it's stuck with me ever since.

In terms of who to play AS though…I'll go Super Meat Boy. That masochistic little guy lets me do all the truly hardcore platforming I've been dying for for the past 15 years or so!

  • I probably agree. "Probably" because Tex Murphy is also in the running. Having said that, GK2 is set in my favourite bit of Germany, while Overseer was rubbish. So, yes, Gabriel Knight it is 🙂

  • Juliet Starling for me. Fun character for a fun game, but also very well designed character, and her character is used by the narrative to make a good point.
