The original open world crime saga is now available on the PSN in North America, tomorrow in the rest of the world.

It’s hard to believe that Grand Theft Auto 3 first appeared on the PS2 over ten years ago. It’s also hard to believe that the game never really gets old, does it?

With its recent appearance on iOS and Android bringing the uber-popular title into the public eye once again, it’s only natural that GTAIII’s next step would be back to the Playstation as a PS2 Classic.

At long last, the original three-dimensional, open-world Grand Theft Auto title makes its way to the Playstation® Store for the price of $9.99. Released in 2001 to critical and commercial success, Grand Theft Auto III is widely credited as one of the most influential video games of all time and a landmark moment in popular culture. With world-class voice acting, an action-packed and deftly satirical storyline, a stunning soundtrack and revolutionary open-world gameplay, Grand Theft Auto III delivered a new sense of freedom in videogames.

Influential is right, they could probably add in ‘controversial’ too. I remember quite a bit of the old media and politician overreacting that we all know and love when the game first dropped. There isn’t too much of that now, but remember when Jack Thompson appearing on Fox News to talk about ‘murder simulators’ was a pretty regular sight? Ahhh, good times…

  • What's really amazing about this game is going back and realising how primitive it is. The world might be open, but it's also incredibly dull and boring, lol.

    Open-world games don't age very well, I don't think.
