The Elder Scrolls is officially going online

Bethesda today announced that the much rumored MMO version of its popular Elder Scrolls series of RPG’s is a reality.

The Elder Scrolls series has always been about narrative and atmosphere, but now you’ll be tasked with forging your own story as the game will indeed be making the transition to the Massively Multiplayer Online arena very soon.
Apparently Bethesda has been hard at work on the game for several years now and has some pretty lofty goals for it.

“We have been working hard to create an online world in which players will be able to experience the epic Elder Scrolls universe with their friends, something fans have long said they wanted,” said Matt Firor, game director of The Elder Scrolls Online“It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years. The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise.”

Now, as far as details about the online successor to the Skyrim/Oblivion/Morrowind crown- there aren’t any yet. Bethesda is still being very hush-hush about it, though I’d expect a freer flow of info right round E3 time.

For now, you can expect lots and lots of grinding. And if you’d like to know what we think about the idea, why not click here.

  • Hey Spark – I remember that article from before; I thought about it as I saw this headline.  I'm on the fence.  I think this can be good if well-down.  World of Warcraft was a lot of fun and built off of a very different experience than the MMO it became.  I know there is going to be a lot of displeasure over this announcement, but I'm intrigued and definitely willing to see how it plays out.

  • I'm no fan of MMO's in general. I did play a little WoW back when the game first dropped, but it just couldn't keep my interest for all that long. That said, the promise of a more 'mature' online experience is pretty cool.

If only these types of games allowed you to adventure solo more… You know, still coming across other players out in the wilds, but having it be fully playable for a single player. I'd be a lot more interested in that than something that puts a heavy emphasis on parties and team-ups…

  •  That last part – I definitely agree with.  the majority of my time in WoW was spent solo really, but the flip side is you get these cool houses and deck them out in Elder Scrolls and… well, you have no one to show your accomplishments to, so there's a definite space there if it can be filled properly.

  • Not happy. Not happy at all.

The only way this could work is if it followed the Dark Souls/ Journey formula – don't let the people speak online (so they can't be obnoxious), and limit interaction (so they can't be obnoxious)
