Will we see a Suda 51 film? It’s tantalisingly possible

Suda is one of the most creative minds in the game’s industry. His successes, such as Shadows of the Damned, are literally mind blowing, but even is less succesful experiments, such as No More Heroes: Heroes Paradise had its strengths in its storytelling and aesthetics.

Given the obvious comparisons between Suda and, in the film world, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, I don’t think I’m the only person that would love to see a Suda-helmed film. The good news? The great man himself is very much for the idea.
At an interview with Digitally Downloaded at a recent preview event, Suda implied that the only thing holding him back from doing a movie is the time commitment. Being the creative force behind a company of 150 people doesn’t leave much free time.
“Mabye not now because I’ve heard if you want to make a film it takes about a few months months, and that’s time I don’t really have,” Suda said.
“But at the same time yes, if I get enough time, I’d like to make one. I’m getting to know a lot of movie directors in Japan. If the opportunity is there and the timing is right then sure.”

Personally, I have my fingers crossed for a Shadows of the Damned film. Grindhouse at its finest.

Look out for next month’s issue of the Digitally Downloaded magazine, due early June, for a full interview with Suda, and the creator of Alice Madness Returns, American McGee

  • how is no more heroes less successful than shadows of the damned which isn't even out yet? just saiyan.
But yes, I would love to see a Suda film. I'm a huge fan of all his games and I'm positive he would make a fantastic movie.

  • Dear ANON above: NMH is less successful than Shadows of the Damned because commercially it sold poorly (even in Japan), where as Shadows is getting all kinds of advertising and press attention.
Sure, it's kind of annoying how the article claims that SotD is already a commercial success, of course.

Back on topic, I would LOOOOVE to see a Suda movie- I've been pining for one ever since NMH1

  • I kind of understand that.
It just to me sounded like we weren't talking about money, since one of the games wasn't out yet.
And if we're not talking about money, then we're talking about the game itself. And I think in that respect, NMH was very successful, in that it has a following like that of Okami (which also did not sell well, but is widely known as a great game)
Although, I hear a lot that NMH did poorly in sales. I don't think this is true. Poorly in Japan, this is a fact. But it did make enough money in the US and Europe to warrant a sequel.
Also, not sure why you would specify Heroes Paradise instead of just No More Heroes.

  • Hi Anonymous folks,

By "less successful" I meant in terms of its quality as a game. Of course, that's always subjective and I'm aware that the series has its fans, but I was not a fan of the No More Heroes franchise.

Having had the opportunity to play Shadows of the Damned for a few hours, I can categorically say that it is in an entirely different league to No More Heroes.
