The key art for Buzz or Die.

Kodansha Creators’ Lab has announced that it will publish the Bon-developed visual novel Buzz or Die. In it, you compete in a new gruesome game show for viewer votes to avoid being sent to death row. Buzz or Die is in development for PC and is expected to launch this year.

In the game show Buzz or Die, a handful of prisoners gamble with their lives. Two players scrub through their opponent’s past to create a damning video—complete with a catchy thumbnail—and screen it on-air. If your video goes viral, your record will be wiped, and you will be free to go. Fail, and you will die, with your death being streamed online.

Here is more information on the game, via Kodansha Creators’ Lab:

Dig through the opponent’s entire history in search of scandalous skeletons in their closet: read through their past conversations, and scan their memories for disgraceful deeds, treacherous thoughts, and appalling actions.

Package their horrid histories with the perfect words and images to create a killer thumbnail in the most salacious manner possible, then roll the video for the audience. Whoever pulls in the most likes earns their freedom and one wish. The loser is put to death, with their android likeness condemned to eternal labour. It’s a dig at their dignity… but it’s not like they’ll be around to see it.

Among the peculiar cast with sordid pasts handpicked for stardom (or expedited execution): a former comedian turned bomber, a genius hacker, a revolutionary, and a chef with an appetite for people. It’s a popularity contest like no other, with no consolation prizes!

“At first glance, Buzz or Die seems a bit extreme,” says Bon, the game’s solo developer. “It has an outrageous premise and complicated characters. It’s a hard-hitting, memorable gameplay experience, and there’s a ton of depth to be discovered that I do not want to spoil.”

Developed by Bon and published by Kodansha Creators’ Lab, Buzz or Die will be released for PC via Steam later this year.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
