Chinese indie studio Jotoyo may have already unveiled early alpha footage (which has become a viral hit), but today it officially announced the life-sim RPG Monster Fantasy. The game combines gameplay from titles like Animal Crossing and Monster Hunter, creating cohesive single and multiplayer experiences. It blends freeform, moment-to-moment combat with village management and life-sim elements, all wrapped in a colourful Chibi aesthetic.
Monster Fantasy’s experience can be broken down into two modules: combat and life simulation. Each operates independently of the other, with players able to engage in elements from either to progress the story. Focus on hunting, or spend time gathering, producing, building homes, and enjoying the slow pace of village life.
You begin by creating a customizable hero to journey across the Kingdom of Eldoras, teaming up with NPC companions to hunt mighty monsters. Befriend charming villagers and enjoy life-sim activities such as fishing, cooking, potion-making, and more.
The kingdom is teeming with extravagant creatures, like the Nine-Tailed Fox, the swift-winged Griffon, the ferocious Fire Dragon, and more. But monsters aren’t only enemies; they can become your companions. Tame defeated monsters and keep them as pets to help in exploration and combat settings. They will age over time, evolving new abilities and skills. Ecological factors will also impact monster behaviour, so learn about them before a hunt.
Monster Fantasy features four combat classes, each with its own abilities, weapon choices, and playstyle. You can select from Warrior, Mage, Archer, and Swordsmaster. The warrior relies on heavy gear and perfect timing, the mage casts customizable spells, the Archer is great for ranged combat, and the Swordsmaster is quick and deadly. Skills are tied to the weapon, so you can evolve your character using any avenue. One character can unlock every skill.
“Our ambition is to break down the barrier between action games and cozy games, creating a world where players of different ages, skill levels, and play preferences can each find their own kind of enjoyment,” explains Allan Xai, Jotoyo’s founder, in a press release. “We hope Monster Fantasy can become a bridge that brings friends and family together. Core players can share the joy of gaming with the people close to them, while casual players can find a warm, welcoming world to return to. We also hope the game can become a quiet emotional shelter, giving players a moment of peace when they feel tired or overwhelmed.”
Developed and published by Jotoyo, Monster Fantasy is in development for PC via Steam. The game’s Kickstarter campaign begins on July 15.
