During today’s PlayStation State of Play, Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja announced the third game in the Nioh series. Nioh 3 is a dark fantasy action RPG and takes place during Japan’s turbulent Sengoku period. A limited-time demo will be available for PlayStation 5 today; fans can get a taste of what’s ahead, and newcomers can see if they enjoy the satisfaction of succeeding in the face of constant death. It will be playable until June 18.
Nioh 3’s protagonist is a young warrior on the path to becoming the next Shogun. We’re still in the dark about his motivations, but we do know that players will be able to fight using two distinct styles: Samurai and Ninja. Here are the descriptions of each style, from the PS Blog:
The Samurai style provides a gameplay experience similar to previous Nioh titles. New actions such as Arts Proficiency, which enhances the power of martial arts, and Deflect, which allows players to block enemy attacks at the last moment have been added, helping create a series of intense and deadly face-to-face confrontations.
Meanwhile, the Ninja style excels in quick movements like dodging and aerial actions, giving ninjas the advantage of being able to attack from outside of the enemy’s range by utilizing a variety of “Ninjitsu” techniques according to the situation on the battlefield. Players have the ability to use techniques like Mist, which leaves a clone after an attack, and Evade, which allows for narrowly avoiding enemy strikes. Both techniques help players outmaneuver foes while delivering devastating speed attacks from behind.
The trailer is age-gated, so it’s easiest to watch via YouTube.
Players can switch between styles instantly and at any time. Some will choose to switch between techniques, while others will favour one over the other. Either way, you’re up against some fierce enemies. An open field offers the freedom to explore the tension and confrontations that are a defining characteristic of the series.
Developed by Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo, Nioh 3 will be released for PlayStation 5 in early 2026.
