The key art for Type-NOISE: Shonen Shojo.

I’ve written about psychological escape room game Type-NOISE: Shonen Shojo before when a demo launched last November. The game promises to blend classic escape rooms with a deeply emotional story. New details about the game have emerged and the first official trailer was revealed during Indie Live Expo. In Type-NOISE: Shonen Shojo, solving mysteries is not only the key to survival, it is also the key to self-discovery.

The game begins when a boy and a girl wake up in a sealed underground tunnel. They are strangers to each other and neither remembers their arrival to the tunnel. The tunnel is surreal, dreamlike, and filled with layered logic puzzles. The water slowly rises and the pair are destined for death unless they can solve cryptic puzzles and uncover fragmented memories.

Type-NOISE: Shonen Shojo isn’t only about these two characters: it includes multiple intertwined stories about trauma, memory, and identity. Six teenagers are fighting for their lives in a decaying metropolis called Noise Scramble City; to survive, they must confront their pasts—and each other. The location mirrors their internal traumas, creating a topsy-turvy Tokyo-like labyrinth with places like graffiti-coated underground sewers and haunted, marionette-filled classrooms.

The six characters are Zena, an icy fan of superhero shows; Hiyori, a streamer with a nasty habit of telling white lies to get noticed; Itsuki, angry and tormented by jealousy; the stubborn and skeptical Honoko; Kaito, who has a scar that causes him to be ostracized by his peers; the meddlesome and honest Soto; and Specter, the city’s Whimsical Watcher.

As I previously wrote, the game’s story and puzzle-solving elements are closely integrated. Players solve intricate mysteries, putting together the puzzle pieces of the teens’ pasts to escape the alternate reality. With each stage, gather clues and awaken the teens’ memories. Clues are hidden deeply within every hallucination. Uncovering their past will reward you with hints to solve what lies ahead.

Developed by Dank Hearts and published by WhisperGames, Type-NOISE: Shonen Shojo will be released for PC via Steam in “summer” 2025. It will support English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
