Buried in today’s eastasiasoft showcase was a December release date for the Western Nintendo Switch launch of turn-based RPG Xuan Yuan Swords: Mists Beyond the Mountains. It is a remastered version of the third instalment in the series, with the original launching over 20 years ago in 1999. The game’s rich story is rooted in Chinese fantasy and real historical events.

The traditional RPG features turn-based combat and beautiful 2D sprites that draw inspiration from both Eastern and Western mythologies and history. Take on the role of Frankish knight Septem, recruiting a diverse party of characters for disparate lands to unite against a common threat. Capture and fuse enemies into new items or creatures to help using a special Spirit Fusion Pot. Chinese legends have spoken of the Spirit Fusion Pot as well as the Xuan Yuan sword from ancient times, with new legends set to rise.

Eastern and Western worlds collide in this epic tale that spans Eurasia, Arabia, Francia, and China. Septem will embark on an epic journey to locate the Invincible Arts of War after being unwittingly drawn into the power struggle between cultures. China has been peacefully and prosperous under the Tang Empire, Europe is at the centre of the Dark Ages, and the Arabian Empire is ascendant; it is in the name of progress that these cultures come together.

Here’s a trailer from a few weeks ago:

The narrative is presented using mythological and historically-inspired architectural styles, garb, cuisine, and customs. Players will recruit new characters, capture enemies, then drawn new items and monsters from Eastern or Western altars – resulting in different appearances and properties. Unite the powers of East and West to challenge the ambitions of a dark lord who is tearing at the seams of civilization.

Originally developed by Softstar Entertainment and published by eastasiasoft, Xuan Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains will be released for Nintendo Switch in North America and Europe – as well the Windows Store worldwide – on December 8.
