If you’re into horror and haven’t checked out the Amnesia series, you really should! It’s quite beloved, especially considering how scary the games can be. The latest instalment is Amnesia: The Bunker, described as a pivotal point in the series. For the first time, players are given a high level of freedom to impact gameplay. Choose your playstyle while exploring the semi-open world. There are hardly any scripted events, just constant tension brought on my an ever-present threat. The game has been out for a few months now, but just in time for Halloween the developer has dropped a new update that includes Shell Shock Mode and Custom Mode.
But first! Let’s talk about the game itself. Players enter a French bunker during World War I. You’ll have to evade the jaws of an inhuman creature, surrounded by your comrade’s corpses, while trying to find an escape. Explore the branching environment in successive runs from the central safe room. Keep your generator fuelled – if the lights go out, the creature hunts freely in the dark.
Okay, now onto the Halloween Update:
The two new modes are available after your first complete playthrough of Amnesia: The Bunker. Curate your own horror experience in Custom Mode, featuring more than 30 settings and parameters. And face the most hardcore Amnesia experience yet with Shell Shock Mode.
New creature behaviours increase unpredictability. The Sublevel Fuse System has you restoring electricity to each of the Bunker’s zones. The Hardcore Health System has you lose health while bleeding; bandages will stop bleeding but not restore health, and medkits both stop bleeding and restore health. There’s more randomisation. Saving progress costs fuel. The unlimited supply of fuel, which is already difficult to access, is now locked and requires a combination found somewhere in the Bunker. The Revolver is locked in a storage locker, not available from the start. And the Safe Room? Yeah, it’s no longer safe…
Developed and published by Frictional Games, Amnesia: The Bunker is currently available for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, and Xbox One. It was released in June of this year. The Halloween Update is available now.
