We’re taking a break from our regularly scheduled Catch-up to bring you what really matters: the news from the overnight Nintendo Direct, AKA news about the upcoming Pokémon title for the Nintendo Switch! As is the norm for the series, the title comes in two editions: Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield. It will launch worldwide late this year (I’d wager on November or early December). Here is the first look and Sword & Shield:

Sword & Shield brings players to the Galar region, expansive and diverse. You’ll find rolling countrysides, hip cities, lush forests, and even snow-covered mountains. As always, the player will be battling in Gyms across the region to achieve the goal of becoming Champion.

There are three new starter Pokémon: Grookey, a mischievous grass-type chimp; Scorbunny, an energetic fire-type rabbit; and Sobble, a timid water-type Lizard. As a lifelong Charmander Fan, I’m quite pleased the fire starter is a bunny — everyone loves a bunny!

Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield seems to combine the last 3DS title of the series, Sun & Moon (our review here!), with the recently-released Let’s Go: Eevee/Pikachu! for the Switch. The latter brought Pokémon Go mechanics to something resembling a traditional Pokémon title, so I can’t wait for all of these experiences to come together.
