For many of us at Digitally Downloaded, Mario Golf on the Nintendo 64 was one of the finest games created for that very fine console.

It’s available on the Virtual Console right now if you’ve got a Wii or Wii U, and we consider it one of the most essential Virtual Console titles that you absolutely must own. Offering an absolute wealth of content, with plenty of Mario characters and courses to play through, as well as the best multiplayer golf experience ever made, Mario Golf’s gameplay feels as modern now as it did back when it was first released.
With Camelot to release a new Mario Golf game on the Nintendo 3DS soon, we thought it would be a good time to look back at this classic and just why we’re still playing it now, all these years later.
Enjoy the video below! We can only hope that after Mario Tennis on the 3DS was a complete waste of a game that Camelot nails the 3DS Mario Golf, because these two Mario Sports franchises deserve better than they’re getting at the moment.
