Digitally Downloaded poll results #7: Do you use your consoles for non-gaming applications

Written By Matt Sainsbury on Monday, November 21, 2011 | 15:08

This week's poll surprised me a bit if I was being honest - it looks like consoles really have become more than just gaming devices.

39 per cent of our readers who voted in the poll use their console exclusively for non-gaming applications - movies, music and so on. 33 per cent only use their consoles for gaming. 27 per cent use a combination (more or less) of gaming and non-gaming applications on their consoles.

If people voted honestly, it's a sign that the idea of the dedicated gaming console is on the way out.

Thanks as always for voting, see you at the next one! :-)

It's funny that you asked this poll recently, because I sat there there other night and had been on my 360 page and noticed that 4 of my 9 friends online at the time were watching netflix.  Bit later that night, I was on PSN and this time 8 of my 11 online friends were watching netflix.

Yup, I voted because of Netflix.  I guess if we still used the Weather Channel and News Channel more often on the Wii, I would count those as well.  We haven't used the Internet Channel in a longtime either now that I think about it, but Netflix is used daily.

I must say that I also use my consoles for a heck of a lot of non-gaming applications. I have PlayTV for the PlayStation, and I have PayTV through the Xbox 360. I sometimes use the News Channel on the Wii.

We don't have Netflix in Australia, but I would certainly get into that as well, since we do have MUBI on PS3 here, and I do use that (love old/ foreign films)
