The Utawarerumono series has been around for over 20 years in Japan and nearly ten years in the West. Its core trilogy of tactics-JRPGs — comprised of Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen, Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception, and Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth — are available for PC in English, but Mask of Truth sequel Utawarerumono: ZAN 2 hasn’t been released in the West yet. However, that will soon change as publishers DMM Games and Shiravune bring the AQUAPLUS-developed game to PC with three language options, including English.

Unlike the JRPG series staples, Utawarerumono: ZAN 2 is more of an action-adventure game. It follows and expands upon the story from Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth, matching its most exciting moments with fast-paced action gameplay. Fans can revisit their favourite moments from Mask of Truth, and new players can discover the series from a more casual, approachable perspective. Players can mix it up with flashy combat techniques, gameplay-altering equippables, and evolvable abilities. There are over 20 playable characters and over 50 story missions.

Here are the key features of the game, via its Steam page:

  • Beyond Mask of Deception – The primary story mode follows the plot of Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth, including many new, fully-voiced scenes original to Utawarerumono: ZAN 2 that expand the breadth of the world and the depth of the characters.
  • 3D Hack-and-Slash Reborn – ZAN 2 improves on its predecessor in every way, with a new Skill Board system and refined hack-and-slash elements that allow for a renewed focus on character exploration and growth. Meanwhile, the new base system allows you to explore Oshtor’s estate in Ennakamuy, where you can interact with your companions, progress the story, strengthen your characters, and more. You can even upgrade the base’s functionality using points obtained in the course of gameplay!
  • Animated Storytelling – No paper dolls here! 3D animated story cutscenes give every pivotal moment the sense of weight and place that it deserves, bringing the adventure to life like never before.
  • Dream Online – Cooperative or in single-player, the Dream Arena mode brings enemies, challenges, and maps that wouldn’t be possible within the scope of the regular story. Play online with friends from around the world!

Developed by AQUAPLUS, and published by DMM Games and Shiravune, Utawarerumono: ZAN 2 will be released for PC via Steam with English, Japanese, and Traditional Chinese language support.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
