Nintendo Direct.

Today’s Nintendo Direct was packed with as much news as one could have in 60 minutes. One-third of it was dedicated to Mario’s 40th anniversary and several great pieces of Mario-related news; you can read all about that here. Going into the Direct, rumours were swirling regarding a new Pokémon game and a Metroid release date, but did we see those titles?

Game highlights

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream

Set on a small island floating in the sea, Mii characters live out their carefree lives in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. This sequel to the game with a cult following is similar to its predecessor. Players are in charge of the island, so they create Miis to live there. Base them on friends, family, celebrities… the world is your oyster! Choose each one’s personality and voice before they head off to live on their own. Help them enjoy the island based on what you see in their minds, help them solve problems, help them make friends, and more. Today, a new release window was announced. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will be released for Switch in spring 2026.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake

In this remake of a famous Japanese horror adventure game, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, Mio and Amaya are twins who find themselves lost in a village that has vanished from the map. Players control Mio, the younger twin, who feels the presence of spirits. Explore abandoned buildings, pacifying ghosts with the Camera Obscura. Combat elements have been remade. Developed by Koei Tecmo, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake will be released for Switch 2 in early 2026.

Pokémon Pokopia

When there was mention of a possible new Pokémon game, Pokémon Pokopia definitely wouldn’t have been my guess — it’s better than what I could have imagined! Play as a Ditto that has transformed to look like a human, and shape empty land into a beautiful space for Pokémon. The Pokémon teach Ditto new moves to help meet and expand the world into a paradise. Collect berries/rocks/wood, build furniture, grow vegetables, create homes for new Pokémon friends, shape the land, and more.

Developed by GameFreak and Koei Tecmo, Pokémon Pokopia will be released for Switch 2 in 2026.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave

In this latest entry to the long-running Fire Emblem series, the Heroic Games have begun. Today’s debut trailer teased its intertwined story, characters, and turn-based tactical RPG gameplay. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave will be released for Switch 2 and Switch in 2026.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
