Western publisher NIS America has announced that rural life simulation game Village in the Shade will launch for PC and consoles this October. The game initially launched in Japan about two weeks ago as Honogurashi no Niwa, with sales already surpassing 100,000 units in that country alone.
Village in the Shade is set in a Japanese mountain village brimming with secrets. You can do as you like: plant crops, customize your homestead, befriend intriguing characters, watch the cherry blossoms grow, or relax by the brook. There are just so many ways to relax.
Unfortunately, there are a few simple rules to ruin the fun of it all. You can’t talk to strangers, you can’t leave the village, and no matter what, you cannot go outside during the night.
Here are the game’s key features, via NIS America:
- Unsettle Down – Make your new home feel like home! Buy furniture in town to decorate your house, then craft fences and other items with the resources you’ve gathered around your farm.
- Festivals and Fun – Experience traditional Japanese festivals and activities, like the summer festival and cherry-blossom viewing. Get closer to your neighbours as you enjoy laid-back living.
- Secrets Aren’t Meant to be Shared – Discover the truth about Kagatsu at your own risk, or follow the rules and keep from seeing a part of the village you don’t want to.

In the “Village in the Sunshine” mode, you cannot break the rules, meaning you can enjoy the quiet countryside to its fullest: farm, hunt, and fish at your own pace.
A physical, limited-edition version is available to pre-order from the NISA Store. It includes a copy of the game for Switch 2 (on a key card, but that’s a rant for another day), a collector’s box, an art book, a copy of the original soundtrack, an acrylic block, a set of five enamel pins, and a sticker sheet.
Developed by Nippon Ichi Software and published in the West by NIS America, Village in the Shade will be released for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Switch 2, and Switch on October 27.
