The key art for Iwakura Aria.

Last month, PQube announced that it will bring Iwakura Aria to Western territories later this year. I do not know why I’m only receiving a press release now, dated for today, so I’m a bit bummed I didn’t get to talk about this pre-holidays! Iwakura Aria is a suspense visual novel developed by MAGES.; it launched for Nintendo Switch in Japan during June 2024. Players will travel back to the summer of 1966; for a young maid named Ichiko, those few months were filled with twisting emotions and featured an unexpected romance, all revolving around mysterious secrets held by the Iwakura family regarding its heir. When it is released in the West this year, Iwakura Aria will be released for PC (for the first time) and Nintendo Switch.

You play as Ichiko, who has fallen through the cracks while the rest of Japan grows rapidly following the war. She doesn’t see a future for herself, save for the possibilities presented by being a housekeeper at the Iwakura family mansion. The family, like many, has secrets they would like to keep buried. Ichiko grows close to the family’s heir, Aria — the person to whom most of the secrets are connected. Ichiko quickly finds herself enthralled with the world inside the mansion’s walls.

While others have hopes and expectations for Aria and Ichiko, they have lost sight of themselves. They continue to play the roles they have been given, but who is in control? The fateful meeting between the two, combined with courage and willpower, might just be the key to unlocking their strength.

Iwakura Aria features a branching narrative with nine different endings. The decisions you make along the way will shape Ichiko’s life 33 years after the main game ends. You can explore the mansion using a map, with different rooms providing information key to revealing secrets.

Developed by MAGES, and published (in the West) by PQube, Iwakura Aria will be released digitally for PC via Steam and Nintendo Switch sometime this year. It will also be released physically for Nintendo Switch.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
