I love Rent. I have been obsessed with the famous broadway musical for decades. I rarely get to reference it here on DDNet, which means I’m so happy I get to now! An original Rent cast member plays the main character in Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical’s upcoming DLC, Stray Gods: Orpheus. Announced during LudoNarraCon 2024, Stray Gods: Orpheus is the first DLC for what is easily the best musical roleplaying narrative adventure game out there – is there even another? The DLC will be released for PC in late June and for consoles soon.
I want to briefly recap the base game. Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical follows a college dropout named Grace who has been granted the powers of a Muse. With the end goal of finding out the truth behind the last Muse’s death, you’ll choose who Grace allies with, who she trusts, and who she expects to betray her. The game features original, fully-interactive music numbers; it is so good it ended up on my list for the best game soundtracks of 2023. The cast includes Laura Bailey, Troy Baker, Felicia Day, and Rahul Kohli.
Stray Gods: Orpheus is a brand-new story starring Anthony Rapp (Rent) and Erika Ishii (Dimension 20). Rapp is an incredible musician, even outside of the fact he is the Mark in Rent; his 2000 album Look Around is one of my all-time favourite albums. In the DLC, Rapp takes on the titular role of mythology’s infamous bard as he tries to find his own path and write his own myth.
The DLC is described as a “comedic feature length experience that history buffs, hopeless romantics, and rock stars alike can enjoy.” Orpheus’ story was finished, or so he thought until Hermes brings him back to the world of the living. You’ll help guide Orpheus through the complicated depths of moral decisions. Who should he date? What should he hope for? What instrument should he rock out on? Choose to reject, embrace, or rewrite the stories expected of Orpheus.
There are six brand new songs featured in the DLC. Each decision changes the song and the story. That’s hours of interactive music to explore! The songs are composed by by Austin Wintory; lyrics are by Simon Hall (Tripod), Montaigne (Jess Cerro), and new addition Tom Cardy (Red Flags, Artificial Intelligence).
Developed by Summerfall Studios and published by Humble Games, Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Music is available now for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series, and Xbox One. Stray Gods: Orpheus will be released for PC via Steam on June 27 and for consoles soon.
