Sand Land, an action RPG based on the manga of the same name, was announced nearly a year ago and I admit that I haven’t given it much (okay, any) coverage. That’s entirely my bad. But better late than never? Sand Land is set in a world with extreme water shortages (AKA the near future). Beelzebub the Fiend Prince, small-town sheriff Rao, and demon Thief set off in search of a Legendary Spring said to be hidden in the desert. Earlier today, a new trailer was released that shows off some of Sand Land’s action-packed sequences to the rhythm of a Eurodance song.

I’d like to take a quick moment to jump back to the beginning of Sand Land. The manga was created by Akira Toriyama in 2000; the author is also known for Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump. Sand Land gained popularity over the years, and in 2022 the Sand Land project was announced. Various partners are coming together to bring the manga IP across other forms of media, so the game is only one part of what’s planned.

In this desert world, both humans and demons are suffering thanks to the extreme water shortage. The trio of Beelzebub, Sheriff Rao, and Thief set off trying to find the Legendary Spring. Beelzebub, who introduces himself as a super evil fiend, has the pure heart of a child but also superhuman strength and telepathic abilities. Rao has asked for help from the demons regarding the shortage. Thief is a wise old demon with, shockingly, thieving abilities.

The “action” part of this action RPG includes vehicular and character combat. There is access to several (not seven, but actually a number that’s more than a few and less than many) vehicles that can be customised and equipped to traverse the land, overcome obstacles, and take on mighty foes.

Here is today’s new Sand Land “Sandstorm” trailer:

The above trailer features action sequences to the rhythm of Sandstorm, a Eurodance song by Darude. Beelzebub is a tricky one; whether travelling by foot or by vehicle, he’s always ready to counter any opponent with powerful punches or bullet rains. As Sand Land progresses, players will develop his skills and unlock devilish capacities while fighting off goons, desert dangers, and a hero from the neighbouring land who comes with his very own devoted army.

Developed by ILCA and published by Bandai Namco, Sand Land will be released for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series on April 26.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
