An MMO FMV game?

The key art for Silent Hill: Ascension.

Silent Hill: Ascension has an interesting concept as it’s not just one thing. It’s part video game, part television series that takes the audience’s choices and applies them directly to what is happening in the story. It’s like a massively multiplayer FMV game, basically. It will be premiering in mere hours, with a pre-show event streaming in advance that chats with series creators. Despite not even being available yet, there is already a decision available that will impact the outcome of the first scenes in the live stream. There’s also a new video available explaining “the essentials.”

The interactive experience follows two families in peril. In one of these families in Rachel Hernandez, who the decision centres upon. She’s a rising mystic acolyte, a mother, and a community leader. And she will perform a ritual on a new cult member, Joy Cirelli. Things will go wrong, and hen they do, what will Rachel do? There are three options: a) Finish the oath, b) Run!, or c) plead for mercy. The entire audience decides, and can return daily to make more decisions that will determine the fate of multiple characters.

The below video, titled “The Essentials,” is pretty much self-explanatory. It explains how the series works, how the audience makes decisions, and more. The audience will impact the story through puzzles and other elements. Choices will be available for a minimum of 24 hours so that fans across the globe have time to participate without time zone constraints.

After the premiere, return to the app or website to watch the latest scenes, solve puzzles, and participate in story decisions. At the same time daily, new scenes will unfold. Weekly packaged episodes will be available for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 via the Sony Pictures Core app, Bravia TVs via the Bravia Core App, and Xperia smartphones via the Bravia Core for Xperia app.

While the experience is free, Genvid has made a Founder’s Pack available until November 14. It includes exclusive profile customisations like a Founder’s icon, Founder’s frame, exclusive themed frame, emoji, and sticker. It also includes a Season Pass that allows fans to unlock over 100 tiers of rewards and Influence Points, plus additional cosmetic items. The Season Pass is valid for the remainder of the first season, or approximately six months.

Silent Hill: Ascension will premiere at 9 p.m. ET (12:00 p.m. AEST). The “experience” is available for PC via your browser, iOS via the App Store, and Android via Google Play.

New Support 7

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
