Today, Marvelous Europe announced that it would be publishing female-led high-speed platformer Freedom Planet 2 in Europe and Australia. Marvelous already has a relationship with the developer: while the first game as well as its sequel are both self-published for PC, Marvelous published the first title for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. So this partnership comes as no surprise.

It’s been nearly a decade since the first game launched, so it’s about time for a sequel! Players will return to the world of Avalice to battle an ancient threat. In the game, years have passed since its predecessor. Players are given the opportunity to take on each stage how they want, with carefully tuned balance of speed and exploration. The game promises to be a bigger, better, and more enriching retro experience than the original.

Merga, a water dragon from Avalice’s oldest (and deadliest) war, has been freed from her prison thanks to the Kingdom Stone’s destruction. War is imminent once again, but the heroes are split between the sides. Friendships are tested. Will our heroes stand united when Bakunawa rises?

The three heroes return after refining their signature abilities, making them even more powerful than before. Lilac has crazy speed with her Dragon Boost, Carol can reach new heights with her Jump Disc or motorcycle, and Milla’s shield helps take a more measured approach. An all-new character, Neera, won’t be left out in the cold: she has the Frost Arts ability to punish flies.

In Adventure Mode, the sprawling world map is filled with treasures, landmarks, and over 100 unique animal NPCs to interact with and catalog. After Adventure Mode has been completed, players get access to Classic Mod that has a streamlined navigation screen for quick access to stages and other important features. Once the Battlesphere arena is reached, it hosts a variety of challenges with enemies and previously-encountered bosses.

Developed by GalaxyTrail, Marvelous Europe will be publishing Freedom Planet 2 in Europe and Australia. The game will be published by XSEED Games in North America. This division is common with these two publishers. Freedom Planet 2 will be released for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series, and Xbox One before the end of 2023. It first launched for PC via Steam in 2022.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
