The key art for Wyrmspan.

Monster Couch, the developer behind the digital adaptation of Wingspan and Quilts and Cats of Calico, has announced its newest project for PC: Wyrmspan. Wyrmspan is the digital adaptation of the acclaimed dragon strategy card game of the same name. It’s an engine-building, card-driven strategy game for 1 to 5 players. Take on the role of an amateur dracologist (Dragon scientist, basically), excavating caves and exploring your sanctuary. Entice dragons and chain their abilities for powerful combos. While familiar to Wingspan fans, Wyrmspan brings new mechanics, fresh strategic possibilities, and a rich world of dragons waiting to be uncovered.

It’s worth noting that DDnet’s Editor-in-Chief, Matt, has played Wingspan for over 1,500 hours—despite being one of the busiest people I know! That speaks volumes about the game.

Build your own dragon sanctuary across the Crimson Cavern, the Golden Grotto, and the Amethyst Abyss. Excavate deeper into your caves, attract over 180 dragons, and explore a fantasy world of strategy. Speaking of strategy, you can shape it with every dragon and cave card you play. Manage resources, fulfill objectives, and advance through the Dragon Guild board.

So how do you play? On your turn, you can choose one of three actions: excavate, entice, or explore. When excavating, play a card to open a new space in one of your caverns, making room for more dragons. To entice, spend the needed resources to play a dragon from your available pool. Finally, with explore, venture through your sanctuary and activate each dragon’s ability in sequence. This is where the game’s strategy comes alive, with chain reactions and combos. The more dragons and cave cards you have in play, the more powerful exploration becomes.

Wyrmspan has four gameplay modes: solo against Automa, solo against bot opponents, local multiplayer, and online matchmaking.

The original Wyrmspan board game was designed by Connie Vogelmann, illustrated by Clémentine Campardou, and published by Stonemaier Games. Monster Couch is developing the digital version, which will be released for PC via Steam.
