It’s fair to say that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a title that many fans of the infamous series are anxious to get their hands on. The second in a remake trilogy of Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is set immediately following the first game’s events. Players control Cloud and his party (mostly Avalanche members) as they cross the planet to prevent a megacorporation from exploiting the Lifestream and defeat Sephiroth, who is more than a little power-hungry. Today, a new trailer was released that details Sephiroth’s threat. It also shows epic moments like the fight against the Terror of the Deep boss, and gives us a first look at newly imagined creatures.

Square Enix is constantly describing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth as a “standalone” adventure, which drives me mad; it’s the middle game in a trilogy that is based on a single game. How can that stand on its own? Anyway, it follows Final Fantasy VII Remake, which launched in 2020. That title earned many, many top scores from critics; here at DDNet, Matt gave it five stars and wrote, “I don’t necessarily see FFVII Remake as a replacement to the original game, as remakes generally are. It’s a complement to it, where the developers have built on the world and characters in such a way that it’s like two sides of a single coin.”

In the game, Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Aerith, and Red XIII escape Midgar to travel across a vast planet while hunting down Sephiroth. Sephiroth is a haunting figure from Cloud’s past and he’s hellbent on ruling the planet; he’ll likely succeed unless Cloud and friends join with new companions Yuffie and Cait Sith. Classic locales are reimagined in detail. There are dozens of hours of side quests, fiend hunts, mini-games, and stories about the planet’s people.

Yuffie and Cait Sith should bring a lot to Cloud’s party. Yuffie quickly strikes enemies with a large throwing star. While the star is out, she can unleash a magic-infused attack to punish her foes. She’s great at chaining attacks together and switching their environmental affinity. She has a Doppelgänger ability, allowing her to attack in tandem with her clone. Cait Sith has incredible agility, and attacks enemies from every angle. To change things up, he brings out a moogle pal. His exclusive moves can hurt enemies or buff allies, but generally rely on luck. One move, Let’s Ride!, allows him to hop onto his moogle and enhance his regular attacks. Once riding the moogle, Cait Sith can use Dropkick to give enemies the boot. Yuffie and Cait Sith can team up for Moogle Pinwheel, a Synergy Ability that has them attacking in tandem using a secret ninja technique.

The world is comprised of multiple regions, including Starboard Junon and Shinra-8. Starboard Junon is an urban residential zone within a fortified metropolis overlooking the ocean. It houses Shinra personnel, high-end boutiques, and restaurants. Rufus Shinra’s presidential inauguration parade will be happening there soon. Shinra-8 is a Shinra cruise ship that transports travelers between the planet’s eastern and western continents. It leaves Junon, heading towards the resort town of Costa del Sol. The ship is host to a Queen’s Blood tournament.

Developed and published by Square Enix, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be released for PlayStation 5 on February 29.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
