It’s that time of year again! We’re counting down the days to Christmas with our own little “advent calendar” – one new game to play over the holiday season each and every day.

As the year winds down, things get really busy. We’ve got Christmas parties to attend, the end of year rush on work, and all the rest of it. But it’s also a time where we take holidays, find a moment to relax, and enjoy the company of others. This is the best chance to catch up on some key games that you might have missed from the year… or just play that multiplayer game that you’ve been waiting to get a crew together for.

Day 16: Pikmin 4

Need something wholesome and delightful to entertain kids this Christmas? But, also, want something that you’re going to find enjoyable yourself? That’s Pikmin 4, the latest in the strategy-lite series from Nintendo. It’s almost easy to forget that this game was released this year (Nintendo had a bumper 2024), but it is indeed a 2023 release, and it’s the finest in the series to date.

What is most noteworthy about Pikmin is the personality that it packs into every centimetre of the screen. From the way the cute little Pikmin amble around, to the enemies, which are more amusing than intimidating, and the nonsense characters and plot, Pikmin is one of those games that will have you smiling from end to end. Kids will love it (even if it’s a bit much for them, so they’re watching you play it. But, like the best in “kids” entertainment, there’s more than enough there for adults to get a kick out of it too.
