Matt first reviewed the digital Gloomhaven adaptation in November 2021, writing, “the faithful quality of that adaptation and the stellar production values make it an easy sell to existing Gloomhaven fans, and the ideal way to those that were intimidated by the size (and cost) of the box when they’ve seen it in their local game store to give it a go in the first place.” The original non-digital Gloomhaven is indeed expensive, and will set you back over $200 (give or take, depending on location – in Canada, it’s closer to $300). Now, for the cost of your average current-gen video game, players can experience the tactical board game on their consoles.
Gloomhaven the video game is adapted from Isaac Childres’ board game of the same name. The tactical RPG features unique card-based gameplay with two campaigns, over 350 scenarios, 17 mercenaries, and thousands of abilities to discover. That’s a lot to pack into one game, and may understandably seem overwhelming. There is online co-op available for up to four players, with cross-play across all platforms.
The game includes all content from the original board game, plus all-new features and a digital-only Guildmaster campaign. With 17 unique characters to unlock, players can strategize team synergies. But be sure to play your deck wisely, as every choice in this rewarding fantasy adventure is crucial. Head through terrifying dungeons, hordes of the undead, and fearsome monsters as you reap your rewards or die trying.
There are two versions of Gloomhaven available on consoles. Gloomhaven Mercenaries Edition includes the base game and the Solo Scenarios: Mercenary Challenges DLC. Gloomhaven Gold Edition includes the base game, the Solo Scenarios: Mercenaries Challenges DLC, and the Jaws of the Lion DLC.
Solo Scenario: Mercenary Challenges is an adaptation of the board game expansion and offers 17 Solo Scenarios (one for each mercenary) that can be completed to obtain 17 unique items. Jaws of the Lion is a major content expansion for Gloomhaven that includes four new mercenaries, 10 new items, 24 new battle goals, and 25 scenarios from the original board game expansion.
Adapted for consoles by Saber Interactive and published by Twin Sails Interactive, Gloomhaven is available digitally today for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series, and Xbox One. Physical versions for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch will be distributed by Nighthawk Interactive and released on September 19. The game first launched for PC via Steam in October 2021.
