Next week is a busy one: as of now, there are eight showcases we’ll be covering (mostly on the weekend of June 11-12). Sony was smart to stay out of that mess and scheduling its State of Play for today instead, allowing all eyes to be on PlayStation. What am I hoping to see? Ideally, we would get a trailer for the next Final Fantasy title – it’s been announced and we know a trailer is ready. As Lizzo says, it’s about damn time! Aside from that, expect at least a couple reveals and some information on upcoming PSVR2 titles.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

Oh Sony, you can’t even start this State of Play with something new, instead of a remake? That kind of sucks. To be fair, though, I have a deep love of Resident Evil 4 and if I play any remake, it will be this one. It just has a special place in my heart. The trailer starts with a kind of cowboy-styles music, before showing off bits of gameplay. PSVR2 content is also in development. Resident Evil 4 will be released on March 24, 2023.

Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil Village is getting the PSVR2 treatment! I feel like this is something fans have been begging for, so give the people what they want! I’d never play one of these games for VR, I’d never sleep again, so I’m impressed by all the brave souls who will gladly play in VR.

The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners Chapter 2 – Retribution

The first thing that comes to mind: great, that’s three zombie games in a row. My second thought? That’s one heck of a mouthful when it comes to the title, someone needs to rethink this naming scheme. Anyway, this game is set in the world of the Walking Dead and is (obviously) the second chapter in Saints & Sinners. The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners Chapter 2 – Retribution will be released later this year.

No Man’s Sky

No Man’s Sky, no man (or woman) is surprised that No Man’s Sky is coming to PSVR2. It will probably be quite impressive, considering the expansive universe it depicts.

Horizon VR: Call of the Mountain / Horizon: Forbidden West update

You know when you just glance at the beginning of a trailer and just know what franchise it is for? That was my reaction here, even though I’ve never touched a Horizon game in my life. There are robot creatures in nature. But why are they attacking humans? Horizon VR: Call of the Mountain is a PSVR2 exclusive.

There is also a major (and free!) update to Horizon: Forbidden West available now. It includes an ultra-hard difficulty and new game+ option.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered

A PlayStation fan favourite is coming to PC. Made by Insomniac? It must be Marvel’s Spider-Man! It’s a great game, and I’m excited that PC-only players will have the chance to play it on August 12. Rumour has it that Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales won’t be too far behind…

Stray

I’m so excited to see a bit more of Stray! I love cats in my games, and I love games about cats! A kitty is exploring a world filled with robots. There are no humans in sight. Kitty is going to have to be smart and stealthy to survive! Stray will be released on July 19.

The Callisto Protocol

They call Callisto the dead moon. Just like the antagonist would’ve been if someone didn’t rescue them. This game is filled with mutant/zombie things, and appears to have loads of jump scares. It looks pretty gory, too. The Callisto Protocol will be released on December 2.

Rollerdrome

Words cannot express how many times I’ve had to tell my computer that I want to write “Rollerdrome” not “Roller drone.” Either sounds interesting, though. I think this is like a roller derby slash zombie hunting game? It’s an odd combo. It almost resembles a comic book, with minimalistic cel shading. Rollerdrome will be released on August 16.

Eternights

Our game’s protagonist is wondering if things will ever be normal again for him. Let’s be real: he fights monsters and has a wicked light-up arm. Nothing is normal anymore. At least he has love, though! This game is an action sim turned dating fame. Eternights will be released in early 2023.

Street Fighter VI

Street Fighter comes to New York City. Okay, it looks to be called “Metro City,” but just like Gotham we all know it’s NYC. The game is technically a world tour, so other locations will be explored. Finding strength isn’t a game. The journey has no real ending. All your favourites are (hopefully) there. It’s your moment. It’s your fight. Street Fighter VI will be released in 2023.

Tunic

Tunic is coming to PlayStation! The Finji-developed game has become a smash hit since its PC/Xbox launch, and I’m thrilled to see it find another home on PlayStation consoles. Tunic will be released on September 27.

Season: A Letter to the Future

This is the kind of game I tune into these showcases for: games you never expected to even exist, but now that it does you need it in your life immediately. A woman has set out to record life at the end of the season, to make their existence real to the people of the future. When the season turns, what will remain? Only what she captures. The world was telling her its secrets, maybe even what will happen when the season ends. Season: A Letter to the Future will be released this “autumn,” so Q4.

Final Fantasy XVI

FFXVI! FFXVI! FFXVI! It’s all I wanted from this State of Play! In a world ruled by tyranny and turmoil, there are those who would fight to take back control of their fate. What are the dominants? The power they wield wears away at their very being. The trailer starts by showing off the battles we know and love, as well as some tender moments between characters. The battles seems to be on a much larger scale than in previous games, with giant creatures against giant creatures (including Shiva, Bahamut, and more). Awaken, child of fate… Final Fantasy XVI will be released “summer” 2023, so Q3 2023.

Lindsay picked up an NES controller for the first time at the age of 6 and instantly fell in love. She began reviewing GBA games 20 years ago and quickly branched out from her Nintendo comfort zone. She has has developed a great love of life sims and FMV titles. For her, accessibility is one of the most important parts of any game (but she also really appreciates good UI).
