While certain other game shows (yes, PAX, you) seem to think that organising live events during a pandemic is a responsible thing to do, the leading event on the Japanese calendar, Tokyo Game Show, is being more cautious. It’s devastating to me because I get a lot of value for DDNet by attending the show, but it’s also the right, appropriate thing to do: TGS 2021 will be an online-only event, as it was last year.

The event will run from September 30 to October 3, and will be wall-to-wall video streams of Japanese developers and publishers showcasing everything that they’ve got going on. Historically, TGS hasn’t been an event for big reveals, but rather a discussion about the local industry (to the Japanese), and their ongoing role in it, so I would expect that to continue this year.

Interestingly, this year there will be a physical venue prepared for the media to get hands-on time with games and interview developers. The size and scope of that venue remains to be determined, but it leaves me wondering whether it will still be worth the trip, assuming I can get properly vaccinated and then out of Australia to make it…

Anyhow, I digress. The website for the event is now live, and you can check it out here: https://expo.nikkeibp.co.jp/tgs/2021/
