Sony’s early momentum with the PS4 continues, with the manufacturer announcing that to date it has sold 5.3 million units worldwide. This figure means an additional 1.1 million units for the year to date.

This also means the console will shortly overtake the Nintendo Wii U for the most sales in the console generation so far. The Wii U has, to date, sold 5.86 million units worldwide. With the PS4 to launch in Japan shortly, the console’s about to get another sales boost.

The Microsoft Xbox One, meanwhile, sits at third place with approximately three million sales through to the end of December, and we’re not sure yet how it has performed in the 2014 calendar year to date.
