The weekly discussion: The best console launch of all time

Written By Matt Sainsbury on Saturday, February 23, 2013 | 08:00

With the unveiling of the PlayStation 4 this week, we're all in the mood to talk about new consoles, I think.

But since we've already discussed the PS4 to death, let's talk about console launches instead.

Of the consoles that you've bought at launch, which have impressed you most, and why? Was it the launch line-up of games, the sheer thrill of the new hardware, or some other kind of nostalgia that has made that console launch your benchmark ever since?

Speak up, and happy gaming!

Well, this will be an easy one for me since I've only ever purchased 1 console right at launch, and that was the PS1. Why it impressed me? It was a huge leap forward graphically, was only my 2nd console to date to use discs (I had owned a Genesis CD) and enjoyed not only some of the early titles, but also the ability to listen to CD's on it.

GameCube, or Wii. I would probably go with Wii, only because it launched with a Zelda title (sure, it was really a GameCube title), but it also introduced something really new and "different" than the other consoles at the time with the controllers.

GameCube is mentioned, because it launched with Rogue Squadron....where is Rogue Squadron!?

The Gamecube was my favourite Nintendo launch for Rogue Squadron as well. What a brilliant showcase for the console that was.

I quite liked the Wii U launch as well. Mass Effect 3 (which I hadn't played before) and a fine port of Warriors Orochi 3? I spent a lot of time on the Wii U last December.

I'm really enjoying the Wii U, and probably have played it most in the launch period. I just think that NoA dropped the ball with the launch of it. The games, very good. The actual launch, not so much.

Vita.

Really? Wow I didn't realize that...

A new console launches (and a home console at that!) and there are no midnight launch parties? That is weird.

I remember the last round of launches pretty vividly. Picking up the 360 was a highlight and that particular console really made the current gen for me. It was a neat and tidy experience as I knew the manager at EB (remember that store?!) and he let me in early and I just hung around, nice and warm, till I was able to grab my console.

I ended up waiting in the rain outside a circuit city for three hours for my Wii talking with the other dudes in line about the original Gears of War lol I still can't believe I was able to score one as I didn't preorder and just took my chances. (which didn't work this time around with the Wii U :P)

My PS3 I grabbed at Best Buy literally two days after Christmas. I was returning some gifts and they had a monster stack of them behind the counter that I just couldn't resist.

I think the most memorable console launch of all time for me though was the PSOne. I freakin' loved that system and I was so impressed with it that I imported the Japanese model (and bought a US one shortly after launch). Toshinden and Tekken FTW! Ahh- good times...

I've only bought two consoles at launch, the 3DS and the Wii U (the latter being opened a few days later).

None of those really impressed me. I got the Wii the Christmas that it came out, and I fell in love with it. I'm not sure if it was a new Zelda, Wii shoulder or the Wii remote, but I just had fun. (It was also quite a while since I was able to get my whole family playing video games).

Yeah, GameStop didn't do it, supposedly because of "security issues" with the cost of the console, so I'm wondering if they won't do it for the PS4 and Durango either.

I just remember with the PS3 and Wii, people camped outside overnight for the things, and there wasn't that type of hype this time, but again it could have been because of pre-orders being made much more widely available.
