Originally scheduled as a completely separate expansion to its popular Saint's Row the Third, THQ President Jason Rubin today confirmed that that particular project has been canceled and merged into something else.
"When I looked at the Enter The Dominatrix expansion in production at Volition, I was blown away by the ideas and desire to expand the fiction of the franchise,” said Jason Rubin, THQ’s President. “I asked the team what it could achieve given more time, more resources, and a broader scope for the project. We all agreed we wanted to play that game. When it comes to Saints Row, it’s clear our fans want bigger, better, and even more over the top, and that’s why Enter The Dominatrix will now be incorporated into a vastly expanded, full-fledged sequel, scheduled for calendar 2013.”
EtD pitted the leader of the Third Street Saints up against an evil alien mastermind bent on world domination in a Matrix-like setting. The main gameplay hook for the pack was that your created character would have had powers and abilities much like Neo from the Matrix films.
It remains to be seen just how the pack will be converted and merged into a Saint's Row 4 for 2013 but the announcement itself is a little bit of a stunner. Since Rubin took over as President of the flailing company, he had announced (much to the shock of fans) that he would seek to limit the "over the top" attitude that SR absolutely bathes in. He actually called it "embarrassing" at one point.
Seeing as how that's the whole point of the game, and a point that makes the series quite popular as well, it was more than a little surprising. And yet now he's announced that maybe the most 'out there' of all the content that the series has ever gotten will be expanded? Maybe somebody had a word with the man?
Either way, look for the Enter the Dominatrix expansion to mingle with a fourth Saint's Row adventure some time next year.
