If you haven't been following the Remedy developer diary's, American Nightmare started out as a purely arcade experience. That 'survive til morning' mode actually did make it into today's final release, but as an extra feature. The main bulk of things is a fully fledged side-story that fills in the blanks of what happens after the first title- Wake's hunt for the devilish Mr.Scratch.
