Retro Review: The Legend of Zelda (Wii Virtual Console)

Written By Clark Anderson on Saturday, December 17, 2011 | 18:00

The title that started it all makes its way to the Wii as one of the very first downloadable titles. Obviously longtime fans will not pass up the chance to play such a prestigious title for free, but will it still appeal to Zelda newcomers? That’s not an easy question.

Review: Magical Whip: Wizards of Phantasmal Forest (DSiWare)

Written By Clark Anderson on Friday, December 16, 2011 | 18:00

Magical Whip is easily one of the best DSiWare releases to date for just about every conceivable reason - it’s criminally inexpensive, highly engaging, and simply charming. It just has one problem that tarnishes its appeal.

Further dispelling that silly idea that tablets and smart phones can't play "real" games, GTA III: 10 Year Anniversay Edition is now available on iOS and Android devices.

Napoleonic tabletop gaming coming courtesy of Slitherine/ Matrix Games in 2012

Napoleon has always been a popular topic for wargames. His battles are historically memorable for the broad range of tactics that were at play, and hey, who doesn't like to be a world-conqueror?

Nintendo had said that 3DS Ambassadors would be able to access their ten free GBA games from the 16th. For the first time in gaming history, Australia got lucky, and Aussies can grab their games now.

New Command & Conquer game from EA is both social and browser-based

You're probably thinking "uh oh," from that title - there's a few million browser based "strategy MMOs," out there, and they rival the very best of Zynga for their ability to make you part with money from your wallet, but then again, EA is making a big deal of Command & Conquer: Tiberium Alliances.

RAAM's Shadow headlines busy week for XBL

Xbox Live had the week that wasn't last week, but the platform is ready for a nice little turnaround.

3DS Virtual Console Christmas buyer's guide

It’s been a reasonably slow start to the 3DS’ Virtual Console. Since the console launched back in June, we’ve only seen 24 Game Boy or Game Boy Color games released (in Australia).

Of course the 3D Classics has remedied this somewhat, and this is a story of quality over quantity; many of those 24 games are well worth buying.

Ancient Games of Nations on iPad - relive the real classics

Well, here’s a rather brilliant idea. Ancient Games of Nations, a new release for the iPad, gives players a chance to play board games so old, they’ve probably never heard of them or seen them outside of museums.

Review: Defenders of Ardania (iPad)

Written By Matt Sainsbury on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 | 13:20

Defenders of Ardania is the latest attempt to reinvigorate an overused genre: the tower defence. There’s a prettier version headed to PC and the consoles shortly, but if it is just the graphical quality that improves for those versions, you might want to look elsewhere.

Review: Blaster Master: Enemy Below (3DS Virtual Console)

Blaster Master: Enemy Below is a perfect example of what happens when something becomes popular, so something else shamelessly copies it. It has little of the appeal or quality of the game it so faithfully reproduces; Metroid, and is a generic romp that is only going to appeal to the diehards.

Ranking the Elder Scrolls games; from Arena to Skyrim

Written By Matt Sainsbury on Monday, December 12, 2011 | 11:34

So by now most of us have had a chance to properly digest The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It’s a good game, for certain, but the big question is: how does it stack up against the other games in Bethesda’s premier series?

For those who came to the series at Skyrim first, you might want to look back at some of the earlier games. Because if you enjoyed that game, you’re going to be over the moon about some of the others.

Review: Geneforge V (PC)

“First you review number one, then you review number two, then... you go to five? The hell DigitallyDownloaded?”
-You

If I just quoted you, well, I have some explaining to do. If you’ve been following these series of reviews, you would know that I found one and two in the Geneforge saga to be utterly awful – so bad in fact that I nearly skipped the last three so I could spend my time writing other things. But the powers that be that run this site want some sort of closure to the saga, so I’m skipping the three and four, hoping that things got better, or at least changed – as I had complained about before.
