Review: Beat Hazard Ultra (PSN)

Written By Nick Jewell on Saturday, October 29, 2011 | 17:08

They say that music is the only true international language and I fully believe it. There’s something about music that is unlike anything else, some undeniable quality that everyone across the globe can identify with. No matter what style of music you’re listening to, there are commonalities between them that allow anyone to be able to find some merit within, even if you don’t particularly like the style. I know many people who can’t stand rap music but have to admit the bass is usually pretty awesome, and that is only one example.

Because of this, I’m kind of surprised that the games industry hasn’t leapt at the opportunity to utilize music in their games in new and innovative ways. Sure, we’ve had games like inFamous that used their game as an excuse to hire experimental artist Amon Tobin to do their soundtrack, or games like Dead Space that advanced the way ambient sound was used by utilizing AI-directed sound to provide audio stabs at scary points of the game. Even Rock Band has its fair share of innovation, even if it only uses music as a way to achieve points.

But none of these examples are what I’m talking about. I long for a game that utilizes music as a core component, using it in different and interesting ways to have a direct impact on the game. Luckily for me, we have games like Beat Hazard Ultra.

Review: Avatar Panic (XBLIG)

Written By The Angry Spark on Friday, October 28, 2011 | 20:41

Milkstone Studios' Avatar Panic is a super simple game that's amazingly fun and addictive to play. It's also one of the multitude of indie titles that uses your avatar as an... avatar.

Review: Burger Time Deluxe (3DS Virtual Console)

There were some really great, even deep games released on Nintendo’s original Game Boy console; the Castlevania games, Donkey Kong Land series, and especially the Final Fantasy Legend games.

Nintendo’s done a decent job of releasing some of its true classics to the 3DS Virtual Console (Zelda, Super Mario Land 2), but aside from Gargoyle’s Quest, Catrap and Avenging Spirit, third parties have not come to the table yet. Burger Time Deluxe is not going to help change that.

Shop for Nintendo eShop games on your PC or Mobile? It's happening

Some interesting comments have come out of a recent Nintendo investor call: namely that Nintendo wants to help you shop for digital products even when you don't have your 3DS around.

Mavel Comics app hits Android

It's not a game, but hey, most gamers like their comics too, right? Android owners can now download a Marvel comic reader.

Review: Shantae: Risky's Revenge (iPad)

Well, there we go: the iPad can do hardcore platformers well. Shantae has just proven that.

Review: Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer (iPad)

Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer is a deck building card game. In other words, it’s one of an assortment of games that tag along behind the classic game, Dominion, not nearly as popular or influential, but containing many of the same basic gameplay elements.

It's Halloween time on Xbox Live this week! There are ghouls, ghosts, invaders from beyond... and race cars... to be had! DAYYYYYYTONAAAAAA!!

War of the Worlds annihilates XBLA

When I first saw War of the Worlds, I sort of brushed it off as a simple, Limbo-like sidescroller. Other than the 2D aspect- I might have been a little off on my rush evaluation.

10 PS3 exclusives that are tragically underrated

Written By Matt Sainsbury on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 | 15:42

Not every PlayStation 3 exclusive game has been given a positive reception when it was released, and in some cases, that’s entirely justified.

Review: Kyotokei - Polarity Shooter (iPhone)

Kyotokei – Polarity Shooter is the iOS version of the Wii game released earlier this year and, for those who missed out on that one, its a continuous side-scrolling shooter that appears heavily influenced by Ikaruga (except it’s a sidescrolling shooter rather than vertical). It’s fast-paced, action-packed and a lot of fun so despite its derivative nature it plays well and will provide quite a challenge even to experienced gamers.

Screens: Battle of the Elements coming to DSiWare

DSiWare doesn't get a whole lot of love, except when it comes to puzzle games. Battle of the Elements is... a puzzle game.

Make your own games on iPad with Codify!

While this won’t be a review (it’s not a game as such), I wanted to highlight a new iPad application, Codify, as it’s one that I feel is well overdue, and adds a heck of a lot of value to the iPad.

Arkham City Maps... On Your Phone!

Written By Nick Jewell on Monday, October 24, 2011 | 15:54

Batman: Arkham City will be game of the year. There, I said it. Even against titles like Uncharted 3, Skyrim and Battlefield 3, Batman will once again reign supreme. This is my prediction.

Opinion: Five good reasons to pay full RRP for games

One of the things that has always confused me about the games industry is the many of the fans themselves, and their insistence that they’re paying too much for games.

Review: Dungeon Defenders (PSN/ XBLA/ Steam)

Written By Matt Sainsbury on Sunday, October 23, 2011 | 21:16

I was all set to pull out the red pen with Dungeon Defenders. It’s not a bad game, but it’s a criminally average tower defense game at its core. As I was playing through the generic levels I realised that I’ve already played this in a bunch of games on the iPad – Vampire Rush, for instance.

Review: Payday: The Heist (PSN)

How many of you have seen the movie Heat? Y’know, with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer? It’s a fantastic movie, certainly one of the best crime capers ever committed to film, and features arguably the best bank robbing scene in the history of cinema. If you haven’t seen it, I’d highly recommend you stop reading this article and go and find it.

Review: Bejeweled 3 (XBLA)

If you haven’t played Bejeweled in some form by now, then it’s hard to imagine you play games at all. Like Tetris before it, this puzzler is both accessible, but addictive and well-made enough to appeal to the most hardened gamer. Getting those really top scores is a massive challenge, after all.
