Review: Golf (3DS Virtual Console)

Written By Matt Sainsbury on Friday, October 14, 2011 | 15:39

Golf on the Game Boy is much the same game as NES Open Tournament Golf, only there’s not as much content.

Sony makes portable gaming that little bit easier with USB charger

Most of us with PSPs (and especially PSPGos) know the story: halfway through the train or plane trip, the console battery dies. Boredom ensures. But Sony is fixing that, with a device that's going to cost just $Aus40.

GTA 3 comes to iOS and Android

If you have an iPad 2, iPhone 4S or the following Android devices: Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S2, Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, you're in for a treat: you're going to be able to play GTA 3 on your touchscreen device.

Review: 4 Elements HD (PSN)

It’s rare to find a game that can genuinely stand up and claim it brings some kind of innovation to a genre as saturated as match-3 puzzlers, and I can’t claim to have played anything that is quite like 4 Elements HD.

Win one of five copies of indie hit, Astralia!

Astralia is a space-age indie game that impressed us greatly; We awarded the XBL Indie Games version 4/5 in our recent review.

Review: Men of War Vietnam (PC)

Ever play chess? On a battlefield? Then, even if you've never played one of 1C's Men of War titles, you've played all of them.

Scribblenauts gets remixed on iOS

5th Cell's critically acclaimed title, Scribblenauts, has just made the jump over to iOS in the form of "Scribblenauts Remix". The game is a remixed edition of the original 2009 DS title, featuring some levels from the old game as well as brand new ones.

Just for fun: In a perfect world, the next Smash Brothers would be...

Written By Matt Sainsbury on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 | 22:39

If what Nintendo has been saying is true, we’re quite a way away from the next Smash Brothers game. That’s ok, we all know it’s going to be awesome. But hopefully it’s awesome because they’re working with Square Enix to bring a crossover game to our Wii Us and 3DSes.

Sony wants you to play your UMDs on the PlayStation Vita

Just not in the way you thought. One of the big... controversies surrounding the upcoming PlayStation Vita was that it was not backwards compatible with the PSP, in the sense that it doesn't have a UMD slot.

Review: Orcs Must Die! (PC)

The humble Orc and his position in the world of fantasy is an unenviable one. Whether it is in Dungeons & Dragons where they are a low-intelligence, low level brute sent to provide a barrier between you and a chest of treasure, low-intelligence servants of Sauron and Saruman in Lord of the Rings, or low-intelligence MMO grinding fodder, their role is clear. They are simple pawns in the game of life; there to allow the hero to get tougher. And thus is born Orcs Must Die!; a game all about killing Orcs. And how is the best way to kill legions of Orcs? Tower defence.

Interview: Chris England, the man behind Xenonauts

The most satisfying/disappointing screen
Chris England is hard at work on a game that a certain group of gamers are awaiting eagerly. He founded a studio, Goldhawk Interactive, to make a spiritual successor to X-COM: Enemy Unknown (or UFO: Enemy Unknown, depending on where in the world you are) -- no small task, that one. Many fan projects have sprung up over the years with the aim of recreating the atmosphere of Microprose’s classic but most have failed to deliver results that satisfy the hardcore X-COM fan community.

Review: Astralia (XBLIG)

Mining in space always seems to set off a whole heap of trouble (see: Dead Space, Red Faction) and things are no different in this Indie offering from developers Astroboid.

Digitally Downloaded poll results #5: What is a reasonable price for an A-grade downloadable title?

Written By Matt Sainsbury on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 | 23:21

Another week goes by and we have some new poll results to share with you. This time around we asked our readers what they felt was a fair price for a top-quality downloadable title.

Review: Streetball (Android)

Most people either love sports games or hate them. Here is a fun arcade basketball game that doesn't take itself too seriously. This may put off some hardcore sports gamers but I think it opens the market up nicely for casual gamers and that is exactly the kind of game I love on a mobile phone.

Review: Pocket War HD (iPad)

What do you get when you turn Flight Control into a wargame? Well, Pocket War HD.

Bit.Trip presents: Runner 2, Future Legend of Rhythm Alien

Commander Video is making a comeback in the sequel to Bit.Trip Runner, Bit.Trip presents: Runner 2, Future Legend of Rhythm Alien. Along with the awesome new title Commander Video will also get a new art style -- moving the series away from the 8 bit sensibilities to a more cartoon-y style. He's also getting some new moves and abilities to go along with the re-imagining.

Interview: The man that turned Cthulhu into a hero

Written By Matt Sainsbury on Monday, October 10, 2011 | 15:20

Robert Boyd and his indie outfit, Zeboyd, managed to turn the one and only Cthulhu into a hero in the XBLA Indie Games and Steam hit, Cthulhu Saves the World.

We’re still not quite sure how that happened, but we’re glad it did. As he hatches up Zeboyd’s next masterpiece, Boyd sat down with Digitally Downloaded to discuss game design and being an indie developer.

Ebay has frozen Xenonaut developer's account

Goldhawk Interactive, the developers of Xenonauts, are having some problems with taking pre-orders right now.

PayPal has locked it of its account and frozen a portion of its development budget. Chris England, project lead on Xenonauts, explains his trouble with PayPal on the official Xenonauts blog:

Review: Frayed Knights: The Skull of S'makh-Daon (PC)

Besides the not-so-humble FPS, the RPG is the most ‘done’ genre out of all the schools of videogaming. As a result of this, we’ve all become used to the same characters, plots, villains, mechanics and twists- they’ve been used over and over again to the point of which we can spot exactly where we’re going from the opening title screen. Frayed Knights: The Skull of S'makh-Daon realises this and takes every available opportunity to poke fun at it.

Interested? You should be.

Why I hope there are no more 'Souls' games after Dark Souls

Written By Matt Sainsbury on Sunday, October 9, 2011 | 11:32

As I play though Dark Souls (EDIT: Read the review at Otaku Gaming), I’ve come to realise something; as Dark Souls is the sequel in all-but-name to Demon’s Souls, I really, really hope that From Software doesn’t feel the need to make another ‘spiritual’ sequel.
